Music and Lyrics is the title of a 2007 romantic comedy – a story, by the way, that is based on a high concept. It’s about the coming together of two lost artistic souls – a composer (played by bad boy Hugh Grant) and a lyricist (played by the sweet and mostly innocent Drew Barrymore). The movie got mixed reviews but it was a resounding success at the box office.
Not only that. Music and lyrics are ultimately how I launched a career in the arts. That’s a story for another day – which I do promise to tell. It plays a big part in the narrative memoir I’ve vowed to pitch to Hay House by April 1, 2022. Oh dear. That’s April Fool’s Day. Oh well. One project at a time. I will say this, there’s NOTHING like a deadline to get yourself to work!
Anyway, this morning I woke up with a song in my heart. It was humming right along in my noggin before I was even fully awake. The title of that song is…
He Loves and She Loves
Music by George Gershwin and lyrics by Audrey Hepburn & Fred Astaire. It was written for the 1927 Broadway musical Funny Face.
There IS a romance lingering on the periphery of my life. He’s been on my mind a crazy amount of time. Falling in love is like that, isn’t it?
So, lyrics. As the great Sting once said, “We’re all just trying to tell a story.” And that’s what the best lyrics do. Here, then, are the lyrics to He Loves and She Loves. I think you can see that these lyrics definitely do tell a story.
Now that I have found you, I must hang around you. Though you may refuse me, you will never lose me. If the human race is, full of happy faces, it’s because they all love, that wondrous thing they call love.
He loves and she loves and they love, so why can’t you love and I love too? Birds love and bees love and whispering trees love and that’s what we both should do. I always knew some day you’d come along. We’ll make a twosome that just can’t go wrong. Hear me. He loves and she loves and they love so won’t you love me as I love you?
Postscript: In an interview with the late, great Broadway composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim (who died about 10 days ago) he recommended the aspiring song writer to have a rhyming dictionary on hand. So I got one.
