Every New Year many of us go through the exercise, or at least consider putting some focused thought into what we would like to start, release, improve or achieve. Being a goal oriented person, I take new year’s resolutions seriously. There are plenty of skeptics and jokes about making plans to take our life to the next level but where would you or I be if we didn’t strive to expand and better ourselves? I know for me, I would’ve missed out on the best things that have ever happened.
In Tony Robbins’ Unleash the Power Within (UPW) participants are led through a series of exercises that anchor in the knowledge that each of us possesses the power to be, do or have whatever we envision and commit to. Getting clear on Why is a huge part of the equation. Another big part of creating real and lasting change is getting clear on why a given goal is a Must. That’s why I’m taking a full day to get clear on what I want, why I want it and why I must remain committed to do whatever it takes to succeed.
Some goals are personal and are best kept private or only shared with a close friend or family member. Sharing goals is as important as writing them down. I write in my journal every day (that was once a goal 😊) and part of that daily routine includes micro-goals. When I complete a task, I put a check mark next to it. Call me a nerd but this is like sharing my goals with myself. It keeps me accountable and gives me a sense of accomplishment. Sharing goals with others is a powerful way of holding yourself accountable and taking the win when you follow through. That’s why it’s so helpful to have a coach.
So what are my top three goals for 2022?
- Become Conversational in Spanish
- Get as Physically Fit as Possible
- Grow in Kindness and Compassion
Each goal, or resolution if you will, requires a strategy. That’s why self-improvement gurus often advocate picking your top three and working on them daily. Any more than that is likely to be too much because these are in addition to our already established routines. For learning Spanish, I have purchased a program. For fitness I have a coach. For growing in kindness and compassion I have meditation and daily reading of scripture from multiple spiritual traditions.
